The Fall Voyage; Roseway’s 12th Season!

The Fall Voyage; Roseway's 12th Season!by Helene Flittie, World Ocean School
The beloved 92-year-old historic landmark schooner Roseway is making her fall voyage from Boston, Massachusetts, to St. Croix, where she will once again spend the winter season serving St. Croix students in educational programs. On November 20, the familiar tanbark sails will reappear outside Christiansted Harbor, marking World Ocean School’s twelfth season in St.Croix. Roseway will be based in St. Croix until mid-March, offering Sunset Sails from 4-6pm, Sunday through Thursday, beginning November 22.
World Ocean School aboard Roseway is a nonprofit committed to serving St. Croix students from November through March every year. World Ocean School’s educational programs help challenge students academically, physically, and emotionally in hands-on programs aboard Roseway, an authentic 1925 Grand Banks fishing schooner.
Last year, World Ocean School worked with 350 St. Croix 5th and 6th grade public school students from Ricardo Richards and Pearl B. Larson Elementary Schools in week-long programs aboard Roseway. The programs were made possible thanks to generous sponsorship from Tropical Shipping, Lime Tree Bay Terminals, Cane Bay Partners, as well as various other EDC’s and individual donations, including an annual gala, and proceeds from evening Sunset Sails out of Gallows Bay.
In addition to their continued commitment to 5th and 6th grade public school programming, World Ocean School hopes to expand their programs to local junior high and high school students as well.
Eden Leonard, World Ocean School’s new Executive Director, started as a deckhand educator in 2009, and found her passion with World Ocean School while working with St. Croix students aboard Roseway. Her role within the organization has evolved over the years, though that initial passion and commitment to St. Croix has remained steadfast. Eden is committed to growing World Ocean School’s positive presence and impact in the St. Croix community.
