In June, 2008, Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. and Diageo USVI jointly announced a public-private initiative for the construction and operation of a high capacity rum distillery on St. Croix. Construction began in August 2009 and has stayed on schedule. By November of this year, the actual distilling of Captain Morgan rum will begin. The rum will then be put into wooden barrels where it will be aged for one year. Beginning in 2012, the Captain Morgan distillery will supply all rum used to make Captain Morgan branded products for the US.
