What's New at Designworks
Designworks, located in Apothecary Hall at No. Six Company Street in Christiansted, opens the 2008-09 Art Thursday series on December 11 with "The Red Pennant," a collection of new paintings by Designworks' own "artist-in-residence" Caroline Duprey.
Caroline studied art at the Manchester Institute of Arts, Manchester, NH; Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Ginger Norman Studio, Loudon, NH; and DeCordova Museum School, Lincoln, MA.
Her work has been exhibited throughout New England and in the Virgin Islands where it is available at Designworks and Twin City Cafe on St. Croix and Mango Tango Art Gallery on St. Thomas.
"Perfect portraits of places are not what I strive for in my art," she says. "Therefore, I work from a sketch done at interesting sites I have encountered in my travels or from memory. I want to capture a particular feeling or color that remains in my mind. An artist, I believe, never knows what the catalyst may be to start him or her on their painting adventure."
THE OBEAH'S SPELL, Trudi Gilliam's new show at Designworks presents sculpture in metal, found objects, and paint that explores the magical spell of the Tropics and in particular St. Croix. Obeah is the spiritual work that helps heal, and find love, which can employ both good or evil. Gilliam explores the spells and charms of the islands that lure us through her weavings and metal images. Trudi has been inspired by St. Croix for over 35 years; she believes the Island is her talisman...
Please join Trudi Gilliam at the unveiling of her new work, THE OBEAH'S SPELL, at Designworks, No. 6, Company Street, Christiansted, St. Croix on Friday, January 23. A reception will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. where the artist will be on hand to meet, greet, and discuss her new pieces of sculpture. For more information, call Richard Harris at 643-1952.
