What Makes St. Croix Different?

what-makes-st-croix-different

Is it our History, our Culture, our Size, our Environmental Diversity? Probably all of these and more. When visitors come to our island of St. Croix, they ask what differentiates us from other Caribbean islands?

For some visitors and certainly for our residents, our rich historical legacy stands out. Starting in the 17th century, interesting stories of European settlers (principally English, Irish, Danish,) enslaved African revolt and independence, mass migrations from other islands, are commemorated and celebrated in holidays and ceremonies, books, research and museums. Our history is evident in our every day life and architecture and contributes to our cultural uniqueness.

Our size lends itself to supporting a larger population. St. Croix has advantages as one of the US Virgin Islands – higher standards of living than many of the smaller Caribbean islands, better roads, availability of goods and medical services, airline service, etc.

Our environmental diversity is unique from other Caribbean islands. St. Croix actually has five distinct landscapes. The “North Shore” is dramatic and mountainous, overlooking deep blue water, rocky cliffs and shorelines, with great views to northern islands. The “South Shore” has savannah characteristics – long stretches of gently sloping grasses. The “East End” is arid and mountainous, with many varieties of cactus, and stunning views of reefs and Buck Island. The “West End” is quieter and typically greener, blessed with rain forests, white sandy beaches, ideal swimming, and glorious sunsets into the sea Finally “Mid Island”, has large stretches of former agriculturally rich flat land, is more densely populated, and offers views primarily extending to the South Shore.

Visitors and residents alike discover preferences for particular landscapes. The differences are indeed dramatic, yet the views of the brilliant sea and sky, the verdant green hillsides, and the cooling tradewinds are found throughout the island!

From cottages to villas, from seaside to hilltop, from historic to contemporary, from small budgets to no budgets, there is something for everyone!
