The Reel Story: Sportfishing in St. Croix

By Anna Holley
It might surprise you to know that the waters surrounding St. Croix are brimming with hungry Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, Tuna, Marlin, and other species of game fish. Other Caribbean locales get more publicity, but St. Croix has much to offer anglers seeking the thrill of reeling in the catch of a lifetime.
Captain Carl Holley stakes his livelihood on providing an excellent day on the water. His passion is fishing, and he loves to show his clients just how exciting a sport fishing charter can be. One of the biggest misconceptions about fishing St. Croix is that you must go far offshore to catch big fish. "Not true," says Captain Carl. "The ocean floor drops to more than a thousand feet just a mile outside of the Christiansted Harbor." Because worthy opponents like Mahi, Wahoo, and Marlin thrive in deep water, anglers enjoy more time fishing and less time traveling to hot spots.
Typically, you can charter a private boat for a maximum of six anglers, with all of your tackle and bait provided. Leaving Christiansted Harbor at 6:00 a.m., you will likely witness a spectacular sunrise over famed Buck Island. As you troll the coastline to such locations as Salt River, Lang Bank, or one of the Fish Attraction Devices (FADS) that surround our island, take in the awe-inspiring scenery of pristine beaches and impressive lush green hillsides - truly an unforgettable memory!
The fight begins, reel screaming, with a worthwhile challenger on the end of your line. Adrenaline kicks in, and what happens next on Captain Carl's 36' Hatteras, Mocko Jumbie, is what he refers to as "controlled chaos." It takes a unique relationship between the captain on the flybridge, his first-mate in the cockpit, and the lucky angler, to land the fish. Carl has the vantage point (and the eagle eyes) high in the flybridge to see the fish in the water. From there, he informs first-mate, Adam Adcock, what the fish are doing. Adam utilizes this information to get the fish hooked up, the angler in the fighting chair set to battle their quarry. Some battles are short and sweet, others long-lasting and difficult, but all a test of endurance. The reward - a victorious angler and fresh fish for dinner!
If you think that sport fishing is only for experienced anglers, think again. The captain and crew of the boat cater to your needs and skill level. Participate as little or as much as you like. The time spent on the water is perfect for family members of all ages, a relaxing way for a wedding party to unwind before the big day, or a business meeting where you will have your client's undivided attention.
Remember, you can listen to others' fish tales, or make your own. Give one of our boat captains the chance to show you just what he has to offer in our sometimes-overlooked St. Croix waters. You'll be hooked!
