Sea-Thru Kayaks

For the past eight months, visitors and locals have become captivated by St. Croix's first see-through Kayak tour, Sea-Thru Kayaks VI, run by father and son team Craig and Bryce Scott. Participants can learn about St. Croix's unique eco-system and history, glide through crystal clear water with the flip of a paddle and watch the underwater world surrounding them.
A special attraction is the nighttime bioluminescence tour, mostly visible two weeks out of the month. A visitor from Colorado likened the experience to "Avatar's magical land of Pandora." As the kayaks skim over the dark water, agitated bioluminescent organisms glow neon green, engulfing the kayak and any other moving object, such as a paddles, darting fish or gliding eagle rays.
"The nightlife in the lagoon is vast and stunning, and the bioluminescence really tops it off, " said a recent visitor.
Bryce, who grew up on St. Croix, mentioned the idea of see-through vessels to his father while working as a kayak tour guide. Some research led them to the Molokini model from Clear Blue Hawaii. These kayaks, made of the same high-tech Lexan used in jet canopies, are completely clear and offer 70-foot visibility, ergonomic comfort and stability. Passengers sit low in the hull in adjustable seats, and control their speed and direction with lightweight two-sided paddles. The Molokini Kayak won "Coolest Invention" from Time Magazine, as well as design awards from the Smithsonian Institute and The Museum of Modern Art.
Father and son have spent much of their lives on their beloved St. Croix, enjoying, surfing, diving, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking and mountain biking. Bryce draws from his rich knowledge of the environment to give enthusiastic, well-delivered history and eco-lessons.
See-Thru Kayaks VI offers guided tours daily from 9 am-10:45 am, as well afternoon tours, full moon tours, bioluminescence tours and private trips for special occasions such as weddings.
If you're ready for a totally new experience, book your tour by calling 340-244-8696 or writing to seathrukayaksvi@gmail.com. After a trip with See-Thru, you'll see St. Croix in a different light.
