Caribbean Living With a Sense of Humor
By Pam Kerschner
"The novelty of Caribbean island living inspires my "cartoon" illustrations and oil paintings a lot. When I first came to St. Croix, I was compelled to pursue my art and enjoyed the support and friendship of many wonderful island artists. After twenty years on St. Croix, I am currently living in Colorado to help my 90-year-old aunt and my father during their challenging years. I paint Caribbean life while living "out west," and plan to retire soon, still painting, in the Virgin Islands.
My many years with husband Trader Bob on St. Croix allowed me to experience some great island adventures. He was instrumental in promoting my 1986 Caribbean Classic Series postcard line all through the Caribbean. I understand that they can still be found at Gentle Winds and Caribbean Sea Adventures twenty-three years later! With the help of a friend, David Hayes, we managed to fly a small plane to personally deliver post cards to the Bahamas, St. Maarten, St. Bart's, St. Kitts and Montserrat. Ever inspired by other destinations, I have painted with art friends on Saba, Dominica, and the BVI. I can't wait to get back to Saba!
One great advantage to being in Colorado has been studying with two master oil painters, Quang Ho and Kevin Weckbach. Working with them has been the highlight of my art career. My paintings are currently exhibited at Mango Tango on St. Thomas, Design Works on St. Croix, and the yearly Good Hope School Fine Arts Show in February."
