St. Croix This Week / Dining
St. Croix boasts many talented chefs preparing some of the most creative and flavorful cooking in the Caribbean. Here you'll find dining experiences to please any palette, whether you are seeking world-class international cuisine, a casual family meal, or quick and delicious take out!
Your setting might be the Christiansted boardwalk, an historic townhouse, a club atmosphere, a small cafe or bistro, a coffee house, overlooking a marina, a view of Buck Island, the waves crashing on the North Shore, on the beach, or one of the stellar sunsets in Frederiksted.
Ethnic cuisines can be found at a host of great restaurants around the island serving up Mediterranean, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, and Japanese. West Indian dishes can also be sampled as well as raw cuisine and local organically grown salad fixings. Don't forget local lobster and the fresh catch of the day, like Wahoo, Mahi, or Tuna when deciding what to try.
Frederiksted has several quaint oceanfront eateries specializing in everything from elegant dining to soul food to world-class coffees, smoothies and light fare. Sunday brunches are famous here and Jazz can be heard live on the weekends. There's even an Internet cafe for your convenience.
Men never need ties and jackets but, since some island restaurants are air-conditioned and others are breezy, women may be more comfortable with a light wrap to cover bare shoulders.
Some restaurants only serve breakfast and lunch, while others serve all three meals, and still others only serve dinner. Check our Advertiser Dining Guide in this section for a quick summary of Cuisine, Meals, and Credit Cards accepted. Though we do our best to keep information current, hours may vary seasonally and it is always a good idea to phone for reservations. Bon Appetit!

As one approaches the 1729 House, the tan one across from Fort Christiansvaern Park, the Galangal sign, made from wine corks by a patron, is hardly visible from the street. Opening the aubergine door is almost magical as one steps inside an elegant white-table dining room filled with original paintings, and Indo-Colonial architectural elements. Sitting down at the cool, dry granite bar, one just knows their Martini is going to be ice cold and the red wine will be at 65 degrees. Galangal specializes in authentic modern Thai cuisine, combining traditional ingredients with international flavors and techniques. Freshness is the key to Galangal's bold flavors and consistent quality. Spices from Vietnam and Singapore, curry pastes from Bangkok and unusual Asian vegetables grown in our own gardens give Galangal's dishes their unique and authentic flavors. Even the soup is made a` la minute. St. Croix's #1 dining destination- (tripadvisor.com). Dinner 5:30 - 9:30. Closed Sunday and Monday.

"Fast Food" feeds millions, but it is "Slow Food" that nourishes the body and soul. This nurturing earth-friendly cuisine, mixed with a heaping helping of eco-sustainability and cultural preservation, is what the Slow Down dinners at St. Croix's Creque Dam Farm are all about.
"The idea for our Creque Slow Down Dinner Experience, or CSDDE for short, was born out of the Slow Food philosophy," says Keith Weitzman, chef for the farm, which is also the headquarters for the Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm Institute (VISFI).
Carlo Petrini, an Italian visionary, founded the Slow Food Movement in 1986 as a resistance effort to combat fast food. The central theme of this now globally-recognized effort is to preserve the cultural cuisine and the associated food plants, domestic animals, and farming within an eco-region. This year, the Creque Dam Farm will represent the U.S. Virgin Islands as one of over 5,000 producers of good, clean, fair food at the Slow Food Movement's Terra Madre conference in Turin, Italy.
